On A Shout blog launched...

The official On A Shout blog has been launched and unleashed on the Hull Truck website. The blog is an insight into the creative process by the play's writer Dave Windass. In the run up to the production, which takes place on Thursday 24th January - Saturday 16th February, 2008, regular blog updates will throw back the curtain on what goes on during the writing of a Hull Truck play - warts and all and - hopefully - with a few jokes along the way. Visit the On A Shout blog.

This is The Point: a place at the end of the world where crashing waves, Force-10 gales and sinking boats are enough to keep an East Yorkshire lifeboat crew occupied 24/7.

Meet Cooky, a loveable rogue with an eye for the ladies, inept new recruit Dobbo, and Jo - a woman doing a job which, as far as the lads are concerned, is a man’s job. No wonder George, who's been living this life for nigh on 40 years, is tearing his hair out….or what’s left of it!

History and heroes from the past keep turning up to remind them that this is a job for supermen and that danger hangs over every mission.

Join our dazzling RNLI crew at The Point as their pagers bleep, they pull on their waterproofs and head out into the unknown. This present crop of life-savers have a lot to live up to and, for George, this is one last chance to play the hero. For the others, well, who knows what fate might have in store…

PRESS RELEASE:

Banging the gong for Rank...

ace

Hull playwright Dave Windass has received an Arts Council England award to research and write a new play about British film mogul J Arthur Rank.

The Grants For Arts award of £4,500 will help bring to life the new drama about Rank, who was born in east Hull and worked as a flour miller before establishing the most successful studio in the history of British film. Read more...

So, why a play about J Arthur Rank?

What, the legendary British film mogul, the man that had Hollywood quaking in its boots? I’m surprised nobody’s got round to doing this before me. It’s a story rich with drama and twists and turns, the tale of a simple lad that worked in a flour mill who became the biggest mover and shaker in the history of British film, a man that single-handedly created a British film industry and was at the helm of a studio that, in its prime, was bigger than any film studio across the Atlantic. Why hasn’t this play already been written? Read the full interview...

New commission

Dave has been commissioned by Hull Truck Theatre to write a fictional drama about East Yorkshire lifeboat crews. More to follow.

Young Writers

Dave is one of twelve writers working as 'resident' online mentors for Sheffield Young Writers, giving young writers the opportunity to ask questions, undertake writing exercises and get feedback on their work. For more information visit the Sheffield Young Writers Ask A Writer! website.

J Arthur Rank

Dave has been awarded Grants for Arts funding from Arts Council England to research and write the first draft of a play about the life of British film-mogul J Arthur Rank. The project will take place over four months and will culminate in a reading of the script.

Sully available now!...

The print edition of the play Sully is now available from Lulu.com for just £6.99

Sully in print...

The print edition of the play Sully will be released later this year. Date of publication and retail price are still to be confirmed.

Sully to return...

Sully, a tribute to Clive Sullivan, which played to capacity crowds in May 2006, will return to Hull Truck Theatre early 2007, dates to be confirmed.

Sully

Sully, a tribute to Clive Sullivan, was performed at Hull Truck Theatre from May 18-May 27, 2006 and played to sell-out audiences. Charles Hutchinson, of the York Evening Press, wrote: "Windass captures Hull rivalries and local colour with a knockabout wit that rises above the locale, while he reconstructs Sullivan's highs and lows with a Hollywood sense of melodrama..."

New play...

Dave has been commissioned to write a new play for Hull Truck Theatre. Following the success of Kicked Into Touch comes a tribute to Clive Sullivan, one of the city’s greatest sporting heroes and a Rugby League legend. Sully will be performed at Hull Truck Theatre from May 18-May 27, 2006.

Windass sells out...

Tickets for Kicked Into Touch were snapped up by keen theatre goers. All three evening performances of the play, which received its world premiere at Hull Truck Theatre on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, sold out. An afternoon matinee performance also attracted a large audience. The play starred Martin Barrass, Belinda Lazenby and Lee Green and was directed by Gareth Tudor Price and Nick Lane.

Quite possibly the best play this year...

The world premiere of Kicked Into Touch will take place at Hull Truck Theatre on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 8pm. The play will be performed at the venue from June 28-June 30. Tickets, priced at £5 (full) and £3.50 (concessions) are available from the Box Office on (01482) 323638.
